An Alternative to the Use of Penethamate Hydriodide for the Treatment of Clinical Mastitis in Dairy Cattle

چکیده
The journal article titled “Effect of Preoperative Erythromycin or Dexamethasone/Vitamin C on Postoperative Abomasal Emptying Rate in Dairy Cows Undergoing Surgical Correction of Abomasal Volvulus” and written by Dr Thomas Wittek, Kataj Tischles, Imke Korner, Dr Tatjana Sattler, Dr Peter Constable, and Dr Manfred Furll may be relevant to practicing veterinarians in dairy practice. The paper concluded that preoperative erythromycin (10mg/kg) is effective in ameliorating postoperative abomasal hypomotility in cows which have undergone abomasal volvulus surgery. This is highly relevant to today’s dairy veterinarian as “the most frequent postoperative complication encountered with abomasal volvulus as a gastrointestinal dysfunction resembling vagal indigestion which occurs in 14% to 21% of cases” (Sattler et. al. 2000).

Systemic treatment of subclinical mastitis in lactating cows with penethamate hydriodide.
A randomized controlled field trial was performed to evaluate the efficacy of a 3-d treatment regimen with i.m. penethamate hydriodide compared with no treatment in lactating cows with subclinical mastitis. To be included, a cow had to have 2 somatic cell counts (SCC) 300,000 cells/mL at the last 3 monthly controls, 1 or more quarters with SCC >250,000 cells/mL, and the same bacterial species i...
متن کاملConventional and extended intramammary therapy of persistent subclinical mastitis using nafcillin-penicillindihydrostreptomycin in lactating dairy cattle
The objective of the present study was to compare the efficacy of conventional and extendedintramammary (IMM) therapy of persistent subclinical mastitis in lactating dairy cattle using nafcillinpenicillin-dihydrostreptomycin combination (NPD). Sixty-five dairy cows with 126 infected quarters were enrolled in the study. Infected cows were allocated randomly to 1 of 3 different treatment regimens...
متن کاملRisk factors associated with bacteriological cure, new infection, and incidence of clinical mastitis after dry cow therapy with three different antibiotics
Factors affecting bacteriological cure rates (BCR) and new intramammary infections (IMI) during the dry period as well as clinical mastitis (CM) during early lactation were investigated in 414 German Holstein dairy cows receiving dry cow therapy. Cows were treated with either benethamine benzylpenicillin (300,000 IU), penethamate hydriodide (100,000 IU), and framycetin sulphate (100 mg, n = 136...

To determine the prevalence of bacterial mastitis in cattle, milk samples positive for California mastitistest (CMT) were cultured during a period of almost 4 years. The bacterial species isolated from 2904 milksamples studied were coagulase negative Staphylococcus sp. in 879 (30.27%) samples, Streptococcusagalactiae in 642 (22.11%), S. dysgalactiae in 332 (11.43%), E. coli in 295 (10.16%), Sta...
متن کاملStudy of the relationship between oxidative stress and subclinical mastitis in dairy cattle
Subclinical mastitis is considered as one of the most prevalent diseases in dairy cows, causing drasticloss in the dairy industry. Oxidative stress, induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS), is believed to be aprimary factor in various cattle diseases including mastitis, but there are few studies regarding the role ofROS in subclinical mastitis. This study was undertaken to i) study the changes...
